Shilcayo Forest

Bosque de Shilcayo

Natural Sanctuary in Tarapoto

The Shilcayo Forest, located in the San Martín region, just minutes from the city of Tarapoto, is a natural paradise that is part of the protected environment of the Cordillera Escalera. This sanctuary combines virgin rainforest, crystal-clear waterfalls, natural pools, trekking trails, unique biodiversity, and breathtaking landscapes. It is the perfect place for those seeking direct contact with nature, adventure experiences, and a closer look at the ecological history of the Peruvian Amazon.

History and Ecological Value

The Shilcayo Forest belongs to the upper micro-basin of the Shilcayo River, vital for Tarapoto’s water supply. For centuries, it was a natural corridor used by indigenous Amazonian peoples and is now considered an essential part of the Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area. In 2011, the local municipality declared the area an untouched area to ensure its preservation.

Its importance lies in three key factors:

  • Water protection: The Shilcayo River supplies much of Tarapoto’s drinking water.
  • Unique biodiversity: It is home to endemic species of birds, mammals, and amphibians.
  • Scenic and tourist value: Trails, viewpoints, and waterfalls make it one of the main ecotourism attractions in northeastern Peru.
