Return train to Cusco after the Salkantay

Returning to Cusco After Visiting Machu Picchu

Routes, Train Options, Schedules & How to Choose the Best Combination

After finishing the Salkantay Trek and exploring Machu Picchu, it’s time to organize your return to Cusco. It sounds simple — but there are multiple train + bus combinations, and small timing mistakes can turn your return into a stressful experience.

Here’s a complete, practical breakdown so you can plan smoothly.

📍 1️⃣ Departure Point: Aguas Calientes

All trains depart from Aguas Calientes (also called Machu Picchu Pueblo).

There is no direct road to Cusco from here — the train is the main and most comfortable way back.

  1. From Aguas Calientes, you typically have three return combinations:
  2. Train to Ollantaytambo + bus/van to Cusco
  3. Train to Poroy + short transfer to Cusco

Train service with integrated connection (depending on company/season)

🗺️ 2️⃣ Main Routes to Cusco

🟢 Option 1: Aguas Calientes → Ollantaytambo (Most Common)

🚆 Train: ~1h45–2h
🚐 Transfer to Cusco: ~1h30–2h
⏱️ Total travel time: ~3.5–4 hours

Why this is the most popular:

  • More departure frequencies
  • Greater schedule flexibility
  • Usually more budget-friendly

From Ollantaytambo station you can:

  • Take a shared van
  • Book a private transfer
  • Use agency-arranged transport

👉 This is the most practical and widely used return option.

🟡 Option 2: Aguas Calientes → Poroy

🚆 Train: ~3 hours
🚐 Transfer to Cusco: 20–30 minutes
⏱️ Total travel time: ~3.5 hours

Poroy station is much closer to Cusco.

Advantages:

  • Fewer transfers
  • More comfortable overall
  • Simpler logistics

Disadvantages:

  • Not always available year-round
  • Sometimes slightly more expensive

🕒 3️⃣ Typical Departure Times (Seasonal Variation Applies)

Exact schedules vary by season and operator, but generally:

🌅 Early Morning (around 6:00 AM)
Ideal if you stayed overnight and want to reach Cusco early.

🌤️ Mid-Morning to Early Afternoon (9:00 AM–1:00 PM)
Great if you visited Machu Picchu early.

🌇 Afternoon (2:00 PM–6:00 PM)
Best if you climbed Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.

⚠️ High season (May–September + holidays): popular departures sell out quickly.

🎟️ 4️⃣ Train Categories Available

Two main railway companies operate this route:

  • PeruRail
  • Inca Rail

Both offer multiple service classes.

⭐ Standard / Expedition Class

  • Comfortable seating
  • Large windows
  • Basic service
  • Best price-value balance

🌄 Panoramic Class

  • Larger windows (some roof panels)
  • Enhanced scenic experience
  • Higher price

✨ Luxury Class

  • Premium service
  • Meals included
  • Exclusive atmosphere
  • Significantly higher cost

Travel time is similar — differences are in comfort and experience.

🧳 5️⃣ Luggage Restrictions

Most trains allow:

  • Small backpack or carry-on size
  • Limited weight

Large suitcases may require coordination.

If you did Salkantay with an agency, your main luggage is usually handled separately.

Always confirm baggage limits before boarding.

🗓️ 6️⃣ How to Coordinate With Your Machu Picchu Entry Time

This is where many travelers miscalculate.

🅰 If You Enter Early (Morning Entry)

  • Train at midday or afternoon works well
  • Leave at least 1.5–2 hours buffer between exiting Machu Picchu and train departure

🅱 If You Climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain

  • Add 2–3 extra hours
  • Avoid early trains
  • Build generous buffer time

🅲 If Your Entry Time Is Late

  • Choose later train
  • Don’t assume you’ll finish early

Most common mistake: underestimating exit time + shuttle + station arrival.

🚐 7️⃣ From Station to Cusco

From Ollantaytambo

  • Shared vans
  • Private taxis
  • Agency-arranged transport
  • 1.5–2 hours

From Poroy

  • Short taxi ride
  • 20–30 minutes
  • Easier at end of long journey

💡 8️⃣ Practical Tips to Avoid Problems

✔ Book your train before starting Salkantay
✔ Match train time carefully with Machu Picchu ticket
✔ Leave generous buffer time
✔ Confirm arrival station (Ollantaytambo vs Poroy)
✔ Avoid scheduling an international flight the same day without major time cushion

📊 Quick Comparison

Route Total Time Flexibility Comfort
Aguas Calientes → Ollantaytambo + bus 3.5–4 h High Medium
Aguas Calientes → Poroy ~3.5 h Medium Higher
Integrated connection service Varies Limited Medium

🏁 Final Takeaway

Returning to Cusco after Machu Picchu is mainly done by train from Aguas Calientes, connecting through Ollantaytambo or Poroy.

The Ollantaytambo route offers the most flexibility and is the most commonly used. The key is aligning your train schedule carefully with your Machu Picchu visit and building in enough buffer time.

A well-planned return allows you to close your Andean adventure calmly — without rushing — and enjoy the final moments of the journey 🚆✨

Doing the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life, and a big part of that was thanks to the outstanding service and care provided by Marvelous Peru. From the very first contact, their team was professional, friendly, and informative. They answered all of our questions quickly and gave us clear, detailed information about the itinerary, what to pack, and what to expect on the trail. The logistics were flawless — every transfer was on time, the campsites were well set up, and the support team was incredibly kind and helpful throughout the journey. A special mention goes to our guide, who was not only knowledgeable about Inca history, the local flora and fauna, and the geography of the Andes, but also passionate and deeply connected to the region's culture. His insights truly enriched our experience. The trek itself was absolutely breathtaking. Each day brought new landscapes: from the snow-capped peaks of the mighty Salkantay Mountain to lush cloud forests, turquoise glacial lakes, and ancient Inca trails. The route was well-paced, with plenty of breaks, and we always felt safe and supported. It’s a physically challenging trek, but Marvelous Peru made sure everyone was comfortable and well taken care of. One of the highlights was definitely the food. Considering we were in remote mountain areas, the meals exceeded all expectations. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. There were generous portions, local flavors, and even vegetarian options — a huge plus for some of us in the group. Our camp chef deserves a medal! Reaching Machu Picchu on the final day felt incredibly rewarding. After five days of hiking through such diverse and awe-inspiring terrain, standing before one of the world's wonders felt even more magical. It was the perfect end to a journey that tested us physically and rewarded us spiritually. I wholeheartedly recommend Marvelous Peru to anyone considering the Salkantay Trek. Their passion, organization, and genuine care for their travelers truly set them apart. If you want to discover the beauty of the Andes and Machu Picchu in a way that’s immersive, authentic, and unforgettable, go with Marvelous Peru. You won’t regret it.

The Salkantay Trek with Marvelous couldn't have been better thanks to our incredible guide, Daniel. Honestly, I've never had such a great guide. Daniel is so warm, cheerful, and energetic. He wasn't just a guide, but part of our trekking family—many guides could learn something from him! Aside from that, our group was very personable, young, and motivated. The private cooks traveling with us prepared amazing food, and there was always enough of it. I've never eaten so well on a trek. Only in the last few days, when the cooks left and provided us with food at the restaurant, did the quality of the food really suffer compared to before. The accommodations were good, the sleeping bags provided were sufficient, and Daniel, our guide, tailored the route to our group's needs so everyone was satisfied.
