Red Valley, Peru

Complete Guide to the Red Valley

Hiking route, landscapes, and how to combine it with Vinicunca

High in the Peruvian Andes there is a landscape that looks almost extraterrestrial. Just a short distance from the famous Vinicunca lies a lesser-known but equally impressive place: the Red Valley.

Located in the Cusco region, this valley surprises travelers with hills completely painted in deep red, terracotta, and brown tones. While Rainbow Mountain attracts thousands of visitors every day, the Red Valley remains relatively quiet, making it a more authentic experience for those looking for panoramic landscapes and fewer crowds.

This guide explains what the Red Valley is, what the hike is like, the scenery you will see, altitude tips, and how to combine the visit with Rainbow Mountain.

🪨 What Is the Red Valley?

The Red Valley (Valle Rojo) is a geological formation in the Andes of southern Peru near the community of Pitumarca in the Cusco region.

Altitude: around 5,000 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest accessible landscapes in the Andes.

Its striking color comes from iron-rich minerals in the soil. Over time these minerals oxidized, producing the intense red tones that cover entire hillsides and valleys.

The landscape often reminds travelers of:

  • Mars-like terrain
  • Red desert landscapes
  • Volcanic geological formations

All surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Andes.

📍 Where the Red Valley Is Located

The valley lies southeast of Cusco, very close to the famous Vinicunca.

Approximate distances:

  • Cusco → trailhead: about 3 hours by car
  • Rainbow Mountain → Red Valley: 30–45 minutes on foot

Because of this proximity, many travelers visit both places on the same trip.

🥾 The Red Valley Hike

Access to the valley involves a mountain hike similar to the Rainbow Mountain trek, but the trail is generally quieter.

Approximate hiking distance

6–7 km total if combined with Rainbow Mountain.

Hiking time

3–4 hours depending on pace.

Altitude

Between 4,900 and 5,200 meters.

At this elevation, oxygen levels are roughly 50% lower than at sea level, so even slow walking can feel challenging.

Difficulty

Moderate.

No technical skills are required, but acclimatization is essential.

🌄 Landscapes of the Red Valley

The scenery here is among the most unusual in the Andes.

🔴 Red Mountains Everywhere

Entire hillsides appear covered in intense red dust and terracotta tones. Depending on sunlight, colors shift from dark crimson to bright orange.

🏔️ Panoramic Ridge Views

The trail crosses ridges where hikers can see kilometers of red mountains stretching across the landscape.

🌵 Almost Desert-Like Terrain

Vegetation is sparse compared with other Andean regions, allowing the red mineral soil to dominate the scenery.

❄️ Snow-Capped Peaks in the Distance

On clear days you may see snowy peaks of the Andes, including the massive Ausangate glacier, creating a dramatic contrast with the red terrain.

🧭 How to Combine the Red Valley with Rainbow Mountain

One of the advantages of visiting the Red Valley is that it can easily be added to a trip to Vinicunca.

Typical Route

1️⃣ Departure from Cusco

Tours usually leave Cusco between 3:00 and 4:00 AM.

After roughly three hours of driving, you arrive at the trailhead.

2️⃣ Hike to Rainbow Mountain

Duration: 1.5–2 hours

At the summit you see the famous multicolored mineral stripes of Vinicunca.

3️⃣ Trail to the Red Valley

From Rainbow Mountain a secondary trail leads to the Red Valley.

Walking time:

30–45 minutes

4️⃣ Descent Through the Valley

Some routes form a loop trail, descending through the Red Valley before returning to the starting point.

This allows hikers to experience completely different landscapes during the descent.

📊 Red Valley vs Rainbow Mountain

Feature Red Valley Rainbow Mountain
Landscape Red valleys and hills Multicolored mountain ridge
Altitude ~5,000 m ~5,200 m
Crowds Low to moderate Very high
Hiking time 30–45 min from Vinicunca 1.5–2 h from trailhead
Popularity Less known One of Peru’s most famous sites
Experience Quiet and scenic Iconic but crowded

Many travelers say the Red Valley is even more impressive, thanks to its expansive scenery and peaceful atmosphere.

🌦️ Best Time to Visit

The best season for visiting the Red Valley and Rainbow Mountain is the dry season.

Ideal Season

April – October

During these months you’ll find:

  • Clearer skies
  • Better visibility of colors
  • Drier and safer trails

Rainy Season

November – March

During this period:

  • Trails may become slippery
  • Clouds may reduce visibility

⚠️ Important Hiking Tips

Because of the extreme altitude, preparation is essential.

Acclimatization

Spend 2–3 days in Cusco before attempting the hike.

Hydration

Drink water frequently even if you do not feel thirsty.

Sun Protection

UV radiation is intense in the Andes.

Bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat or cap

Layered Clothing

Weather above 5,000 meters can change quickly.

🚐 How to Reach the Red Valley

There are three main ways to visit.

1️⃣ Organized Tour from Cusco

The easiest option.

Usually includes:

  • Transportation
  • Breakfast
  • Guide
  • Entrance fees

2️⃣ Independent Travel

Travel to the Pitumarca area and start the hike on your own.

This requires careful planning.

3️⃣ Horse Assistance

Horses are available near the trailhead for travelers who need support during the climb.

🌟 Is the Red Valley Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.

Although most travelers focus on Rainbow Mountain, the Red Valley offers a very different experience.

Reasons to visit include:

  • Wider landscapes
  • Fewer tourists
  • Quiet hiking routes
  • Unique Andean scenery

For travelers already hiking to Rainbow Mountain, adding the Red Valley takes only a little extra time but offers an incredible visual reward.

🏁 Final Thoughts

The Red Valley is one of the most extraordinary landscapes near Cusco and one of the best extensions to a trip to Vinicunca.

Its dramatic red mountains, panoramic trails, and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect destination for travelers who love trekking, photography, and unique natural scenery.

If you are already climbing Rainbow Mountain, saving a little energy to explore the Red Valley may become one of the most memorable moments of your Andean adventure.

Doing the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life, and a big part of that was thanks to the outstanding service and care provided by Marvelous Peru. From the very first contact, their team was professional, friendly, and informative. They answered all of our questions quickly and gave us clear, detailed information about the itinerary, what to pack, and what to expect on the trail. The logistics were flawless — every transfer was on time, the campsites were well set up, and the support team was incredibly kind and helpful throughout the journey. A special mention goes to our guide, who was not only knowledgeable about Inca history, the local flora and fauna, and the geography of the Andes, but also passionate and deeply connected to the region's culture. His insights truly enriched our experience. The trek itself was absolutely breathtaking. Each day brought new landscapes: from the snow-capped peaks of the mighty Salkantay Mountain to lush cloud forests, turquoise glacial lakes, and ancient Inca trails. The route was well-paced, with plenty of breaks, and we always felt safe and supported. It’s a physically challenging trek, but Marvelous Peru made sure everyone was comfortable and well taken care of. One of the highlights was definitely the food. Considering we were in remote mountain areas, the meals exceeded all expectations. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. There were generous portions, local flavors, and even vegetarian options — a huge plus for some of us in the group. Our camp chef deserves a medal! Reaching Machu Picchu on the final day felt incredibly rewarding. After five days of hiking through such diverse and awe-inspiring terrain, standing before one of the world's wonders felt even more magical. It was the perfect end to a journey that tested us physically and rewarded us spiritually. I wholeheartedly recommend Marvelous Peru to anyone considering the Salkantay Trek. Their passion, organization, and genuine care for their travelers truly set them apart. If you want to discover the beauty of the Andes and Machu Picchu in a way that’s immersive, authentic, and unforgettable, go with Marvelous Peru. You won’t regret it.

The Salkantay Trek with Marvelous couldn't have been better thanks to our incredible guide, Daniel. Honestly, I've never had such a great guide. Daniel is so warm, cheerful, and energetic. He wasn't just a guide, but part of our trekking family—many guides could learn something from him! Aside from that, our group was very personable, young, and motivated. The private cooks traveling with us prepared amazing food, and there was always enough of it. I've never eaten so well on a trek. Only in the last few days, when the cooks left and provided us with food at the restaurant, did the quality of the food really suffer compared to before. The accommodations were good, the sleeping bags provided were sufficient, and Daniel, our guide, tailored the route to our group's needs so everyone was satisfied.
