Recommended physical training before doing the Inca Jungle Trek

Complete Preparation for Biking, Trekking, and Altitude

The Inca Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu is a multi-adventure route that combines downhill biking from Abra Málaga, long hikes along Andean trails, and sections in warm climates before reaching Machu Picchu.

It’s not the most extreme trek in Peru, but it’s not a leisurely stroll either. Proper preparation can make the difference between enjoying each stage and suffering unnecessary fatigue.

Here’s a thorough and structured guide to prepare you physically and mentally.

🎯 1️⃣ What does the Inca Jungle Trek really demand?

Before training, it’s important to understand the tour’s actual demands:

🚴 Biking Days

  • Extended descents.
  • Constant brake control.
  • Working your arms, shoulders, and core.
  • Exposure to the cold at altitude.

🥾 Hiking Days

  • 5-7 hour hikes.
  • Sections with elevation changes.
  • Uneven terrain.
  • Heat and humidity in low-lying areas.

🫁 Starting Altitude

  • High point above 4,000 meters.
  • Less oxygen available.
  • Greater cardiovascular effort.

This means you need:

Aerobic endurance
Leg strength
Stability and a strong core
Recovery capacity

🫀 2️⃣ Cardiovascular Base (the number one priority)

Aerobic endurance is paramount.

If your cardiovascular system is strong:

  • You will tire less.
  • You will adapt better to the altitude.
  • You will enjoy the route more.

🗓️ Recommended Frequency

3–5 times per week.

🏃 Ideal Activities

  • Brisk walking.
  • Hiking on hills.
  • Cycling (stationary or outdoor).
  • Light jogging.
  • Climbing stairs.

🎯 Minimum Goal

Be able to maintain continuous activity for 60 minutes without getting exhausted.

🦵 3️⃣ Leg Training (key for trekking)

The Inca Jungle Trek demands strength in your quads, glutes, and knee stability.

🔹 Essential Exercises (2–3 times per week)

  • Squats (3 sets of 12–15 reps).
  • Lunges (3 sets of 10 reps per leg).
  • Step-ups (3 sets of 12 reps).
  • Glute bridges.
  • Stair climbs with a light backpack.

🧠 Tip

Focus on technique over weight. Stability is more important than lifting heavy.

💪 4️⃣ Core and Upper Body

Cycling day requires strength in your:

  • Forearms.
  • Shoulders.
  • Back.
  • Abdominals.

Additionally, your core stabilizes your body on descents.

🔹 Recommended Exercises

  • Front plank (3 sets of 30–60 seconds).
  • Side plank.
  • Push-ups.
  • Resistance band row.
  • Single-leg balance.

🎒 5️⃣ Backpack Training

Although you won’t be carrying all your luggage, you will be using a small backpack.

Practice:

  • Walks with 3–5 kg.
  • Adjusting the straps properly.
  • Walking with weight on uneven terrain.

This prepares your back and shoulders.

🧗 6️⃣ Realistic Trekking Simulation

Once a week, try:

  • A 2–4 hour hike.
  • With elevation changes.
  • On a natural trail, if possible.

Simulating real-world conditions improves confidence and mental stamina.

🫁 7️⃣ Altitude Preparation

You can’t train for altitude if you live at sea level, but you can:

Arrive in Cusco 2 days early.
Get a good night’s sleep before the tour.
Stay properly hydrated.

Avoid alcohol on the first day.

Acclimatization is more important than extreme training.

📅 8️⃣ 6-Week Training Plan

a) Weeks 1–2

  • 3 cardio sessions (45 min).
  • 2 basic strength training sessions.
  • Light weekend hike.

b) Weeks 3–4

  • 4 cardio sessions.
  • 2–3 strength training sessions.
  • 1 two-hour hike.

c) Weeks 5–6

  • 4–5 cardio sessions.
  • Elevation training.
  • 3–4 hour long hike.
  • Light backpack included.

💤 9️⃣ Rest and Recovery

Training doesn’t mean overtraining.

Include:

  • 1–2 rest days per week.
  • Stretching after training.
  • Ankle and hip mobility exercises.
  • Sleep at least 7 hours.

Recovery prevents injuries.

⚠️ 🔟 Common Mistakes

Only going to the gym without walking.
Ignoring hill training.
Not training balance.
Starting 1 week before the trip.

Not resting before the tour.

🎯 How fit do I really need?

You don’t need to be a professional athlete.

Minimum ideal profile:

  • You can walk 10 km without getting exhausted.
  • You can climb 4–5 flights of stairs without excessive difficulty.
  • You can maintain physical activity for 1 hour continuously.

If you meet these requirements and train for 4–6 weeks, you’ll be ready.

🧠 Mental Preparation

It’s not all about the physical.

The Inca Jungle Trek involves:

  • Waking up early.
  • Adapting to the climate.
  • Maintaining a steady pace.
  • Accepting changes.

Training discipline and consistency also helps.

🏁 Conclusion

The Inca Jungle Trek is a demanding but achievable experience if you arrive prepared. With 4–6 weeks of training focused on cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, and stability, you’ll improve your performance and reduce the risk of fatigue or injury.

Preparing well not only improves your physical condition but also allows you to fully enjoy the adventure to Machu Picchu.

Doing the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life, and a big part of that was thanks to the outstanding service and care provided by Marvelous Peru. From the very first contact, their team was professional, friendly, and informative. They answered all of our questions quickly and gave us clear, detailed information about the itinerary, what to pack, and what to expect on the trail. The logistics were flawless — every transfer was on time, the campsites were well set up, and the support team was incredibly kind and helpful throughout the journey. A special mention goes to our guide, who was not only knowledgeable about Inca history, the local flora and fauna, and the geography of the Andes, but also passionate and deeply connected to the region's culture. His insights truly enriched our experience. The trek itself was absolutely breathtaking. Each day brought new landscapes: from the snow-capped peaks of the mighty Salkantay Mountain to lush cloud forests, turquoise glacial lakes, and ancient Inca trails. The route was well-paced, with plenty of breaks, and we always felt safe and supported. It’s a physically challenging trek, but Marvelous Peru made sure everyone was comfortable and well taken care of. One of the highlights was definitely the food. Considering we were in remote mountain areas, the meals exceeded all expectations. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. There were generous portions, local flavors, and even vegetarian options — a huge plus for some of us in the group. Our camp chef deserves a medal! Reaching Machu Picchu on the final day felt incredibly rewarding. After five days of hiking through such diverse and awe-inspiring terrain, standing before one of the world's wonders felt even more magical. It was the perfect end to a journey that tested us physically and rewarded us spiritually. I wholeheartedly recommend Marvelous Peru to anyone considering the Salkantay Trek. Their passion, organization, and genuine care for their travelers truly set them apart. If you want to discover the beauty of the Andes and Machu Picchu in a way that’s immersive, authentic, and unforgettable, go with Marvelous Peru. You won’t regret it.

The Salkantay Trek with Marvelous couldn't have been better thanks to our incredible guide, Daniel. Honestly, I've never had such a great guide. Daniel is so warm, cheerful, and energetic. He wasn't just a guide, but part of our trekking family—many guides could learn something from him! Aside from that, our group was very personable, young, and motivated. The private cooks traveling with us prepared amazing food, and there was always enough of it. I've never eaten so well on a trek. Only in the last few days, when the cooks left and provided us with food at the restaurant, did the quality of the food really suffer compared to before. The accommodations were good, the sleeping bags provided were sufficient, and Daniel, our guide, tailored the route to our group's needs so everyone was satisfied.
