Quistococha Lake, also known as Quistococha Lagoon, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Peruvian Amazon. Located just 13 kilometers from Iquitos, this space combines nature, culture, history, and recreation in one place. Within its 369 hectares, visitors will find a unique Amazonian ecosystem, with a white sand beach, a zoo, a museum, a nursery, picnic areas, and ecological trails. It is also Peru’s only National Tourist Park, making it a protected area of great regional importance.
History of the Quistococha Tourist Park
The complex was created in 1972 with the goal of conserving a representative space in the lowland rainforest of Loreto and providing a recreational area for the local population. In 1984, it was granted the status of National Tourist Park, the only one of its kind in the Peruvian Amazon.
The name “Quistococha” comes from the Quechua language: quisto means pumpkin and cocha means lagoon. The lake is said to be shaped like a pumpkin when viewed from the air. From its beginnings, Quistococha has not only been a recreational center but also an educational space where respect for Amazonian biodiversity is promoted and knowledge about the region’s flora and fauna is shared.
For decades, it has been a meeting point for families, schoolchildren, and tourists. Over time, it has undergone renovations and improvements promoted by the Regional Government of Loreto to maintain its status as one of Iquitos’ main attractions.
