Best Airlines to Fly from the United States to Lima and Cusco

Traveling from the United States to Peru is an unforgettable experience, filled with ancient history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking natural landscapes. The journey usually begins in Lima, Peru’s capital and main international gateway, followed by a short domestic flight to Cusco, the heart of the Inca Empire. Choosing the right airline can make all the difference in comfort, schedule, and overall travel experience. Below, we present a detailed guide to the best airlines to fly to Lima and Cusco for U.S. tourists, with practical tips, service comparisons, and travel insights.

🛫 1. American Airlines – The Most Frequent and Reliable Option

American Airlines stands out as one of the most popular and dependable airlines for travelers heading from the United States to Lima. It offers daily direct flights from major cities such as Miami, Dallas, New York, and Los Angeles, making it a convenient choice for most travelers across the country.

This airline is known for its excellent connectivity and service consistency, offering comfortable cabins, in-flight entertainment, and multiple fare classes to suit different travel budgets. Its membership in the Oneworld Alliance allows passengers to easily connect to other destinations in South America once they reach Peru.

💡 Travel Tip: Miami is the main hub for direct flights to Lima. The flight takes approximately 6 hours, ideal for overnight travel. Upon arrival, passengers can connect with domestic airlines to Cusco early the next morning.

🛫 2. Delta Air Lines – Comfort and Punctuality

Delta Air Lines provides high-quality service and is praised for its punctuality and customer satisfaction.

Its cabins are modern and comfortable, offering in-flight Wi-Fi, personal screens, and complimentary meals on international routes. For travelers who value reliability and smooth connections, Delta is a solid choice.

💡 Travel Tip: For travelers flying through Atlanta, Delta’s largest hub, the flight to Lima lasts around 6.5 hours. Upon arrival, passengers can book a separate domestic flight to Cusco for the following day, allowing time to rest and acclimatize before exploring the Andes.

🛫 3. United Airlines – Competitive Fares and Broad Network

United Airlines connects Peru with several major U.S. airports, including Houston, Newark, Chicago, and Washington D.C.. It is a preferred airline for travelers looking for competitive prices and flexible connections, especially from the East Coast and Midwest.

United’s Economy Plus and Polaris Business Class offer upgraded comfort for long-haul travelers. Passengers also appreciate the ability to use MileagePlus points to book or upgrade flights, making it attractive for frequent flyers.

💡 Travel Tip: Flights from Houston to Lima are among the fastest in United’s network, with an average duration of 6 hours and 30 minutes. From Lima, the connection to Cusco can be made the same day, depending on arrival time and domestic flight schedules.

🛫 4. LATAM Airlines – The Leading Carrier to Lima and Cusco

LATAM Airlines is Latin America’s largest carrier and a top choice for both international and domestic flights within Peru. From the U.S., LATAM operates routes from Miami, New York, and Los Angeles directly to Lima. It is also the main airline for domestic routes inside Peru, including multiple daily flights between Lima and Cusco.

LATAM is renowned for its punctuality, modern aircraft, and efficient service. The domestic flight from Lima to Cusco takes only 1 hour and 20 minutes, offering breathtaking views of the Andes.

💡 Travel Tip: Booking both international and domestic segments with LATAM simplifies baggage handling and minimizes delays between connections. During high season (May to September), it’s best to book well in advance to secure good fares and flight times.

🛫 5. Avianca Airlines – Smooth Travel through Bogotá

Although Avianca is based in Colombia, it has become a strong alternative for travelers from the U.S. to Peru, especially for those departing from New York, Miami, or Washington D.C.. The route includes a short layover in Bogotá, with seamless connections to Lima and other Peruvian cities.

Avianca offers modern aircraft, personalized service, and flexible ticket options. Travelers who value affordability and comfort often find it a competitive choice compared to direct flights.

💡 Travel Tip: Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport is known for its efficiency and pleasant transfer experience. The total travel time from the U.S. to Lima via Avianca ranges between 8 and 10 hours, depending on departure city and layover duration.

🛬 6. Domestic Airlines for the Lima – Cusco Route

Once in Lima, travelers must take a short domestic flight to Cusco unless they choose to travel by land. Several reliable Peruvian airlines operate this popular route, with frequent daily departures.

  • LATAM Airlines: Offers the most frequent and punctual flights.

  • Sky Airline Perú: A low-cost option with good service for travelers seeking budget-friendly fares.

  • JetSMART Perú: Known for competitive pricing, ideal for light travelers who prefer carry-on only.

💡 Travel Tip: Flights from Lima to Cusco operate mostly in the morning and midday due to better weather conditions. It’s recommended to book early flights to avoid possible afternoon delays caused by mountain winds or fog.

🌄 Practical Recommendations for U.S. Tourists

  1. Book early: Flights to Cusco sell out quickly, especially during the dry season (April to October).

  2. Check baggage rules: Domestic airlines in Peru may charge extra for checked luggage.

  3. Allow connection time: If flying the same day from the U.S. to Cusco, ensure at least 3 to 4 hours between flights in Lima for immigration and check-in.

  4. Altitude acclimatization: Cusco sits at 3,399 meters (11,152 feet) above sea level. Rest for a few hours before starting tours.

  5. Best travel season: For smooth flights and pleasant weather, visit between May and September, when the skies are clear and rain is minimal.

  6. Flight durations:

    • Miami to Lima: 6 hours

    • Dallas to Lima: 7 hours

Doing the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life, and a big part of that was thanks to the outstanding service and care provided by Marvelous Peru. From the very first contact, their team was professional, friendly, and informative. They answered all of our questions quickly and gave us clear, detailed information about the itinerary, what to pack, and what to expect on the trail. The logistics were flawless — every transfer was on time, the campsites were well set up, and the support team was incredibly kind and helpful throughout the journey. A special mention goes to our guide, who was not only knowledgeable about Inca history, the local flora and fauna, and the geography of the Andes, but also passionate and deeply connected to the region's culture. His insights truly enriched our experience. The trek itself was absolutely breathtaking. Each day brought new landscapes: from the snow-capped peaks of the mighty Salkantay Mountain to lush cloud forests, turquoise glacial lakes, and ancient Inca trails. The route was well-paced, with plenty of breaks, and we always felt safe and supported. It’s a physically challenging trek, but Marvelous Peru made sure everyone was comfortable and well taken care of. One of the highlights was definitely the food. Considering we were in remote mountain areas, the meals exceeded all expectations. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. There were generous portions, local flavors, and even vegetarian options — a huge plus for some of us in the group. Our camp chef deserves a medal! Reaching Machu Picchu on the final day felt incredibly rewarding. After five days of hiking through such diverse and awe-inspiring terrain, standing before one of the world's wonders felt even more magical. It was the perfect end to a journey that tested us physically and rewarded us spiritually. I wholeheartedly recommend Marvelous Peru to anyone considering the Salkantay Trek. Their passion, organization, and genuine care for their travelers truly set them apart. If you want to discover the beauty of the Andes and Machu Picchu in a way that’s immersive, authentic, and unforgettable, go with Marvelous Peru. You won’t regret it.

The Salkantay Trek with Marvelous couldn't have been better thanks to our incredible guide, Daniel. Honestly, I've never had such a great guide. Daniel is so warm, cheerful, and energetic. He wasn't just a guide, but part of our trekking family—many guides could learn something from him! Aside from that, our group was very personable, young, and motivated. The private cooks traveling with us prepared amazing food, and there was always enough of it. I've never eaten so well on a trek. Only in the last few days, when the cooks left and provided us with food at the restaurant, did the quality of the food really suffer compared to before. The accommodations were good, the sleeping bags provided were sufficient, and Daniel, our guide, tailored the route to our group's needs so everyone was satisfied.
